What is High Blood Pressure?
High Blood Pressure, also known as Hypertension, is a major health issue that affects many individuals around the world. It is a chronic medical condition characterized by high levels of pressure in the arteries. This pressure can cause damage to organs and body systems, which can lead to serious health complications including stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure.High Blood Pressure usually develops gradually over time and has no symptoms in most cases until it reaches dangerous levels. However, certain lifestyle choices such as smoking and being overweight or obese can increase your risk for developing Hypertension. Some other causes of High Blood Pressure include genetics, age, ethnicity, stress levels and diet. The good news is that High Blood Pressure can be managed with lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, healthy eating habits and maintaining a healthy weight. Medications may also be prescribed by your doctor to help lower your blood pressure if lifestyle changes are not enough to control it. In addition to taking medications prescribed by your doctor (if applicable), other ways you can help manage High Blood Pressure include regularly monitoring your blood pressure at home or at a pharmacy or clinic; avoiding tobacco use; limiting alcohol consumption; getting enough sleep; managing stress; and reducing sodium intake in foods (less than 2 grams per day). Living with High Blood Pressure requires making positive lifestyle changes but with the right effort these changes can be manageable while helping reduce your risk of dangerous health consequences associated with this condition.
