What is Around The World?

Around the World in Eighty Days is an adventure novel by Jules Verne published in 1873. The story follows Phileas Fogg, a wealthy English gentleman, as he sets off on a journey to circumnavigate the world in 80 days or less with his French servant Passepartout. Along their travels they encounter various obstacles and adventures of all sorts which make the task of completing their journey much more difficult than expected. The novel is set during the Victorian era, when many people still believed that traveling around the globe was impossible. This makes Phileas Fogg’s mission even more daring and exciting for readers at home who are eager to see if he will succeed. The obstacles presented along his way range from natural disasters like monsoons to clashes with local authorities who do not believe that two strangers could possibly complete such a feat within 80 days. In each instance, Fogg utilizes his wit and knowledge to get out unscathed and continue on his expedition. Throughout their travels, Phileas Fogg comes into contact with many different cultures and societies across the world which enriches both him and Passepartout’s understanding of our diverse planet. It also demonstrates how interconnected we truly are despite being so far apart; one small act can have large consequences elsewhere across continents. Despite facing numerous delays along their route due to circumstances outside of their control, Phileas Fogg succeeds in circumnavigating the world within eighty days proving once again that anything is possible with enough determination and ingenuity.
