Scientists often claim we know less about the oceans of the Earth than we do about the solar system. Despite this apparent lack of knowledge, people often hold very high interests in the microorganisms and unknown species residing within the oceans. One of the greatest mysteries of the ocean that consistently has people discussing its properties is the Bermuda Triangle. For years, the Bermuda Triangle “has captured the human imagination with unexplained disappearances of ships, planes, and people” (NOAA). There are many theories, facts, and myths circulating concerning these disappearances; they have not yet been confirmed. Many sunken and previously missing ships have been discovered, but they seemed to have been abandoned for no apparent reason with an absence of visible bodies. In order to even begin understanding the mysteries surrounding the Bermuda Triangle, one

must inspect and speculate the location, study the disappearances, and research the theories.

First and foremost, the triangle, located in the area of Miami, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, interests people as a sensational and fascinating story. To introduce the idea of the Bermuda Triangle as “a classic American myth,” one must recognize it to be “a place of supposed doom and mystery that’s literally on our shores,” and a very common and feared topic in many areas of North America (00:00:53-00:01:00). Obviously, the Bermuda Triangle often carries a negative stigma as some refer to it as the “Devil's Triangle” or “Limbo of the Lost” due to the rumors and stories mentioning the Bermuda Triangle swallowing ships and planes to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Moreover, the term “Bermuda Triangle” was first pondered by Vincent Gaddis in 1964, and the nam

has remained rather comment ever since his naming of the region.

To elucidate, the location of the Bermuda Triangle is what allows it to strike up the most fear in peoples’ minds. For instance, an informative educational video concerning the Bermuda Triangle clarifies that “The Bermuda Triangle is located in an area of the Atlantic Ocean,” local to the United States. This area has always appeared mysterious, as many major storms occur here. In turn, these storms often stir up rather large waves which can, at times, overtake even larger ships and cause them to capsize. Continuing the horror associated with this area, “the ghostly graveyard of ships” which covers an immense mass of land, approximately 440,000 square miles of land, have caused sailors to traverse much longer routes to their destinations just to avoid such a poorly associated area. Essentially, the location and feeling associated with the Bermuda Triangle have influenced travel routes and caused many stories to be shared concerning this forbidden area.

Over the years, thousands of reports have been made explaining how weird lights can be seen from the triangle. One of the earliest tales recorded of the then unknown area was reported by Spanish sailor, Christopher Columbus:

When Christopher Columbus sailed through the area on his first voyage to the New World, he reported that a great flame of fire crashed into the sea one night and that a strange light appeared in the distance a few weeks later. He also wrote about erratic compass readings, perhaps because at the time of a silver of the Bermuda Triangle was one of few places on Earth where true north and magnetic north lined up(History).

Scientists

and researchers predict the flame Columbus saw was a meteor; some speculation of true north and magnetic north lining up might cause ships to lose track of their path.

The popularity of the Bermuda Triangle comes from the disappearances within. Out of all the places “statistically, there’s no more disappearances” anywhere else in the world. The first disappearance dates back to 1945 when “a squadron of five US Navy Aircraft on a training mission vanished without a trace(Weisberger).” Naval officers concluded the remains of the aircrafts and men were destroyed by storms in the triangle. Ever since, more disappearances continued to occur.

Many have come up with theories to explain these phenomenons, but it still needs confirming. One theory, conjured by Charles Berlitz, is that the Lost city of Atlantis “may lie at the bottom of the sea and can be using its repute’s “crystal energies” to sink ships and planes.” Atlantis is a fictional island displayed in Plato's works, Timaeus and Critias. Even though this city is made-up, many believe this city exists.

On the other hand, theories of the missing vessels were felled by so-called “rogue waves”, which are massive waves reaching heights of up to 100 feet and would theoretically be powerful enough to destroy all evidence of a ship or airplane. In other words, the movement of the currents travels through the Triangle from all sides. This can cause many waves and winds pushing against each other, causing the unimaginable.
