My Therapy Session Against Eating Disorders Essay Example
Studies have shown that eating disorders are common among adolescents. Among the disorders prevalent among youths according to the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement are; anorexia nervosa (AN), sub-threshold BED (SBED), sub-threshold AN (SAN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) ("Prevalence and Correlates of Eating Disorders in Adolescents | National Eating Disorders Association", 2016).
Adolescent stage is such an exciting period of development when youths try to discover themselves and grow. There are also social demands mainly from peers that are always very pushy. At this stage, food is the responsibility of both an individual and partly of the parent. Intervention strategy of a nurse in addressing food disorder issues at this stage is very critical. A good approach in initiating conversation is very important for a successful therapy.
To succe
...ssfully lead an adolescent through therapy, I would first provide them with therapy structures, since most adolescents will often feel insecure and confused when having unguided therapy. According to Berrett, taking the adolescents through this process make them feel that they are in control, more included in the therapy session and mature (Berrett, 2016).
Another intervention would be to make a family system involvement because they form the primary system of support for the adolescents. This creation of the emotional connection between the teenagers and their families ensures that during the therapy session, the family connection is in the mind of the patient therefore assisting the therapist during the session to make the patient to be at ease. I would use this on the adolescents to give them that sense of connection.
In order to have a successful therapy session, I would also strive to make
the session to be more of based on activity than much talking. The activities would eventually assist the adolescent to learn from his/her own experience. As a nurse I will take charge of the therapy session as a whole by making these interventions that will make the adolescent accessible and motivated.
