HIP originated in the 1970s and 1980s from the fields of educational technology and instructional technology. Initially, the application of the Instructional Systems Design model did not consistently improve organizational performance. However, HIP has evolved significantly since then. It became an emerging field of practice in the 1980s and has experienced substantial growth and expansion in literature during the 21st century.
