Impact on Society with Online Education Danielle Randall English Composition II Thomas Edison State College 10 March 2012 Taking online classes is becoming the most popular way for working professionals to have the chance to earn a degree. People who take online classes have better success because they options such as choosing study times, flexibility in completing assignments, which leads to success because now they are able to balance their job and studies. But it’s not all peaches and cream from every aspect.
Some believe it maybe corrupting the social aspect of society. No one need be ashamed of what he or she does not know or how long it takes to master new information. Learning on the Web can be nonjudgmental and self-paced. Using advantages of this technology to expand learning opportunities is particularly crucial, because we live
...in a time when learning is becoming a necessity not a luxury. “It was also proven that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through face to face instruction.
To look into it further, those who took blended courser, a combination of online and face to face, appeared to do the best”, according to US Department of Education. Online learning enables you to extract information from different types of resources anytime, anywhere. There are many advantages to taking online classes. Although most think that traditional classes are better, or appear to be more educational, online educational is beneficial in its, own way.
Earning a degree from an online college can possibly lead to a promotion and or salary increase, or preparation for a career change. Man
times professional who choose to earn a degree, show prospective employers that they remain intact with their duties and job performance while taking on the task of going back to school, which promotes the ability to multi task, be flexible, and stay ahead of the game. One professional quoted “I’ve taken several distance and blended course at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Some have been excellent learning experiences, and other have been agonizing. But what makes this type of course better is the ability of the instructors to accurately plan the time in the online environment so that people like myself and other who work can manage their time between work and school”. The impact of an online education does have various affects on students. A positive impact for one student can be a negative for another student. Online education does have an impact on the lives of students.
Although the method of learning takes place online, students are still able to learn. There is the positive impact on students after completing their degree. The negative impact can include lack of communication with others. Students do not hang out in the student union and sit at tables with classmates in online education. Online education has a different impact on everyone, much like traditional on-campus classroom environments. This negative impact has changed at some online schools, as students are engaging in typed-discussions and live chat sessions.
Online education is also impacting society. Society is shifting closer to online education, just as people are being drawn into using more technology. One parent stated “ my child used to be outgoing and social now all he does is sit on
the computer day in and day. He has no physical interaction with other teenagers”. Although online classes are becoming the most popular way for society to learn, it is not always the preferred choice. Even though it offers flexibility, and benefits, it has been proven that it has its down fall, such as social impairment.
So in conclusion, it is really up to the learner as to what they feel and think about the difference between online or distance classes and the traditional learner style.
