Do you ever feel like work interferes with your personal life? I have faced this challenge many times, especially since becoming a parent. Being a Super Mom, Dad, or even a Super Student requires significant effort. It can be challenging to find the right balance between work and personal life. One potential solution I propose is implementing flexible working hours. However, the question remains: should employers permit their employees to have flexible schedules? From my perspective, flexible working hours offer numerous benefits for many individuals, although it may not be suitable for everyone.
Flex time, also known as flexible work schedules, allows individuals to deviate from the standard 8 to 5 working hours. It gives them the freedom to choose different schedules based on their personal preferences and needs. For instance, a typical flex
...schedule could involve working from 6 to 3 every day or following an 8 to 5 schedule except for one day when they have class - on that day they would work from 7 to 4. Other options may include sticking with a regular shift like 7-4, 7:30-4:30, or 8-5. Furthermore, individuals can decide to compress their work hours into Monday through Thursday and enjoy a well-deserved three-day weekend.
Flex time, whether it is a fixed schedule or daily flex, is a favored choice for employees. Daily flex enables individuals to adapt their work hours to fit personal and work commitments such as family obligations, medical appointments, or other responsibilities during regular working hours. This notion of flexible scheduling gained popularity in the 1990s and was acknowledged by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2008 to apply to approximately 30% of employees i
the job market.
The increasing popularity of laptops, the internet, and telecommuting jobs has made it easier to have flexible work schedules. People who have already had this flexibility often find themselves working more than the typical 40 hours. Companies also benefit from higher employee productivity and morale. Allowing employees to balance their personal lives without affecting work time is thought to contribute to these positive outcomes. Furthermore, offering flexible work schedules helps companies gain a competitive advantage by fostering loyalty and reducing employee stress levels.
Flex time is not always available and can be detrimental to certain positions or small companies. It may pose challenges in communication with employees who are not in the office or available for meetings due to their flexible hours. Understaffing on certain jobs, days, or projects can also be a disadvantage. The key to overcoming these potential drawbacks is effective communication.
In order for this policy to be effective, it is crucial to have clear work objectives and encourage open communication within teams regarding schedules, deadlines, and individual needs. It is also important to clearly define and share the policy with all employees to avoid any perception of unequal contribution. Additionally, we need to consider the productivity of employees who may be lazy or overly social. Based on my experience, employees must demonstrate trustworthiness and dedication in order to earn the privilege of flexibility. This option may not be suitable for everyone, so it is necessary to evaluate an employee's loyalty and commitment to their job.
Can individuals handle the freedom and independence that flexible hours might bring? Can they be relied upon to work well in a team and complete tasks? Typically,
it is the individual's supervisor who confirms that the work is being accomplished, so many companies delegate the decision to allow flexible time to supervisors. Ultimately, flexibility is a privilege. In my opinion, flexible hours are beneficial because research demonstrates that companies benefit just as much or even more from employees who choose flexible hours. Moreover, as an employee who can work flexibly, the advantages provide me with peace of mind.
