My occupation of choice would be a Formula 1 driver. There are only a few, less than fifty at any given time, and only around 20 of them, depending on the number of teams, compete in the world championship every year. The reason I have always wanted to be a Formula 1 driver is not only because of my passion for speed but looking it at from the life of a driver, I love the challenge of finding out every last one-hundredth of a second from the car over a lap.

It might sound like a small thing, but when everything in your team is in unison finding the last one-hundredth can be the difference between a champion driver and an ordinary driver. However, the challenge is not to find the last few milliseconds, but to deliver – and that is the

responsibility of the driver. Moreover, delivering the result consistently is what differentiates the greats from the champions.

The life of a Formula 1 driver is a lot more than what an average viewer gets to see on screen. All the drivers test their cars along with their teams for hour’s everyday and most do in excess of twenty thousand kilometers of testing a year. That sounds like someone who drives a lot, however, in this case, they are supposed to monitor and give feedback on the new parts that might have gone on the car or evaluate a new part of the aerodynamics that the team just developed.

the driver and the team would decide what is the best combination of aerodynamics for the upcoming race. Usually there is a 2 week gap between races, and the time is spent testing for the new race. Also there are other issues apart from the driving itself. F1 teams have huge budgets and the teams and the drivers need to raise that money every year.

The teams have sponsorships from various companies who in turn place their adverts on the cars, the driver overhauls etc. he drivers are also the spokesmen for many of the companies and they do campaigns for all the companies. Depending on how one looks at it, it can be a beautiful part of the job or a chore. I would love this part too, because not only do you end up traveling the world during the championship, you actually go out and meet people from different parts of the world while doing commercials and get to understand the nuances of the different cultures and what is popular in what part of the world and for what reason.

I have a keen interest in people and this part of the job will help me satiate this desire of knowledge. I love the whole feel of going around in a car for two hours, trying to finish the 300 kilometers before anyone else, but more than anything, I guess it’s the feeling of you winning a race and the band playing that national anthem of your country in front of a hundred thousand people and millions worldwide.

Not many people have the honor of their national anthem being played

around the world because of their achievements but if there is one place, just one place then its formula 1 that lets me live my dreams in a way I find will be impossible in any other way. To do for yourself, to find the last drop of oil, to find the last breath of life in a machine, in the constant war of man vs. machine, I feel I will win and the machine will give me a chance to live my life, my way and on my terms.
