During the war, reports from the front lines and trenches were biased, leading Haig to falsely believe in his success. Consequently, he continued to send troops to fight the enemy, causing him to become unpopular with the British public. In December 1916, Haig joyfully wrote that a significant number of German soldiers were on the verge of surrender and were tired of war. He also believed that the Germans had suffered more casualties, which he thought gave the British an advantage. However, this belief proved to be incorrect over time.
