The eco-column lab serves as a valuable learning tool by allowing you to create and observe your own miniature world, demonstrating its similarities to the real world. It resembles the real world with communities of organisms and their environment. Additionally, it operates as a closed system where waste produced by one species must be utilized by another species in the ecological system.
The eco column is made up of abiotic and biotic elements. The abiotic factors include water (in the aquatic habitat), soil (in the decomposition habitat), air, and certain rocks (in the decomposition habitat). Biotic factors consist of grass or terrestrial plants (in the terrestrial habitat), guppies (in the aquatic habitat), and worms used as fish food. These are all the abiotic and biotic factors found in the eco-column.
My group and I created the eco-column
...to incorporate various habitats, including an aquatic habitat. To simulate bottom sediment, we utilized sand and added untreated tap water as a crucial component for the aquatic environment. Furthermore, we introduced aquatic plants and animals to study their adaptation to this ecosystem.
In our research, we conducted tests to gather information on the eco-column. We evaluated various factors in both the aquatic and terrestrial chambers, including pH, temperature, nitrates, phosphates, dissolved oxygen levels, nitrogen levels, phosphorous levels and pH. Additionally, we analyzed qualitative data such as turbidity, plant growth rate, decomposition rate, fish condition and presence of odor or coloration in the aquatic chamber.
The data collection process is included in the appendix of this report. While collecting the data, we observed a limited diversity of organisms. However, it is probable that the producer
were situated in aquatic habitats and the consumers were found in terrestrial habitats. On the other hand, decomposers were likely present in decomposition habitats.
