Students love to look at their work load and say to themselves that they have time but they soon find out how quickly their time went out. Procrastination or in other words cramming, is a major problems among youths around the high school and college years. Its affects to the procrastinator are often overlooked because it just seems to happen. People just like to focus on the present and forget the future which inevitably causes negative outcomes as a result of the cramming. It seems that cramming may be the solution for people who cannot manage to find time to regularly study, however, in actuality it is nowhere near a good substitute for actual studying. Studying is an underrated task that people take for granted until their scores come back and they have received a C or a
...D. Thus, cramming for an examination has negative influences on students because it can cause a student to become undisciplined, problems in retaining information and having lower grades.
First and foremost, cramming for an examination causes a student to become undisciplined. This can be supported as students would not have a fix time or a schedule for them to study. Students might think that they have tons of time to study but without an actual schedule of their own, they could actually waste a lot of time and ended up cramming up at the very last minute. Students should at least allocate one to two hours daily for studying so that cramming would not be an option for them. If students do not study daily, they would have a low motivation to study on a regular basis. Not
only that, they are actually letting time flies doing unimportant things which is such a wasteful. To avoid this from happening, students must manage their time wisely by having an effective schedule and to be subsequent to. Not only that, family involvement in a student’s behaviour from a younger age is also important as students can be train to be discipline when it comes to time management.
In addition to being undisciplined, having problems in retaining information is also one of the effects. Study states that studying on a regular basis is what really helps you to retain information-not the hours of cramming. One may feel like an expert on the subject at hand while they are studying it the night before, but once the exam has passed it feels like all the information from studying has disappeared. People like to feel that if they just study all the key points before an exam then it will be no problem to remember them for a couple hours or a night. Unfortunately, that is not how our brains work. It actually causes the brain to be too exhausted because of all the cramming on the night before. On some tests there are so many main points to remember that memorizing them in such a short amount of time causes confusion. Also, people just try to remember the basic and most straight forward facts. In retaining information, students need to revise their notes from time to time so that their brains are able to retain the information and that is why hurried memorization is a hopeless approach for retaining information.
Last but not least, other than being undisciplined and
having problems in retaining information, students will also get lower grades. Succumbed to their laziness, students who study on the eleventh hour will decrease their time to do revision. On average, a student needs to revise one of their subjects for at least an hour a day. Hence, when a student limits his revision period, he will feel stress because of the pressure of the time constraint, both physically and mentally. Their body and mind are drained from the night before causing them to perform poorly on their examination. Another cause for a student’s degrading result is the lack of concentration during lectures. When a student do not concentrate in class and do not revise his studies earlier, the student would have difficulties in remembering the information thus it will have an effect on a person performance in examination definitely.
In conclusion, the goal of education and learning is complete contrast to the outcomes produced by cramming practice. In view of the ill-effects of cramming, it can be fairly said that cramming is an ineffective learning strategy, and produces mediocre individuals. As Maimonides once said “If a person studies too much and exhaust his reflective powers, he will be confused, and will not be able to apprehend even that which had been within the power of his apprehension.” So in order to get a good result we must study hard, smart and do not study at the last minute. Don’t feel that there is time in the future to get it done because it will become the present and the past sooner than expected.
