Rhetoric is the counterpart of Dialectic. Both are concerned with things within all men’ general ken and do not belong to a definite science. Persuasion modes are the only constituents of art and everything else is merely accessory. Well-draw laws should define the points they can and leave the other to judges’ decision. Enthymeme is a sort of syllogism and syllogisms considerations of all kinds are the dialect business. Rhetoric is very useful since things are true and have a natural tendency of prevailing over their opposites so judges’ decisions are not what they seem to be.

There are three ways of effecting persuasion. The commanding person must be able to reason logically, understand emotions and understand human goodness and character. A statement can be considered credible and persuasive either

because it is self-evident directly or other statements have proved it. “The fact that she is giving milk is a sign that she has lately borne a child” is used as a metaphor to show there is always something to explain an event which has occurred. “The fact he has a fever is a sign that he is ill” is used to mean the same thing.
Rhetoric has three kinds of distinct end in view. Establishment of expediency or the harmfulness of a proposed course of action is the main aim of a political orator. He urges acceptance on a ground which it will do good and rejection on a ground where it will do harm.
