Transitioning from LPN to RN in school requires adjustments, such as allocating enough time for academic tasks like studying and reading. It also involves reducing my workload to effectively retain information in long term memory. Currently, I hold two nursing job positions. One is in mental health, which I find fulfilling because it allows me to provide direct care and develop self-awareness. The other position involves offering long term nursing care, which has given me a profound respect for the elderly and individuals who cannot take care of themselves.
I expect that as a RN, I will have a greater role in care planning and receive more respect from healthcare professionals. There is a perceived hierarchy among different roles, such as CNA, LPN, RN, and physicians, especially during social breaks. While physicians sometimes s
...ocialize with RNs, CNAs and LPNs tend to stick with their own group. Personally, I have always been social with doctors because it helps break down barriers and allows us to showcase our knowledge and build trust in our communication regarding patient care. From an academic perspective, the biggest challenge is often unlearning old habits.
The LPN and RN both provide hands-on care, although the LPN works under the RN's license. Both are responsible for malpractice lawsuits and are advised to have insurance. They can both offer counseling to patients, including teaching about diabetes and caring for foley catheters. However, upon discharge, it is typically the responsibility of the RN to ensure that the patient is well informed and that the care plan has been met. RNs also typically supervise and manage LPNs. Both the LPN and RN advocate for patients
and collaborate with physicians to meet their needs. The LPN usually communicates any changes in patient status to the RN, as they spend more time providing direct patient care.
Both LPNs and RNs can serve as role models. While I worked in Benedictine Hospital’s ER, there were many RNs that I considered my mentors. However, on the med/surg floor, there was an LPN who I believe was one of the most resourceful nurses I have ever encountered. She is now an RN, so transitioning roles was not difficult for her. LPNs typically have less time for research due to their focus on hands-on care. As an RN, one has the opportunity to explore various paths such as medical/legal, homecare, or even forensics. The transition can either benefit or hinder you. The challenge lies in recognizing that when one door closes, all others are open and ready for you to seize.
