From time to time, people in the world are going to be able to experience two things in there lifetime. One is there opportunity to have their fifteen minutes of fame; a time in which they are recognized greatly by people for something they have done. The second is when someone is pointed out of a crowd, or put on the spot to do something, and that person suddenly develops there own stage fright. I was one of those people, the type that preferred to be in the background instead of in front.I was the type that wanted someone else to do something that involved being in front of others.
All of my years of nervousness and shying away taught me something; taking the time to just to breathe can really help calm a person down. It was the big day for
...everyone in the drama club on that one spring afternoon. Citrus High School's drama department was searching for talented students to be in its next big musical: "High School Musical. " Some thought that it crept closer and closer throughout the past week, while others, mostly newcomers, wanted time to just slow down.Ms. Neander, the drama teacher, told everyone who was auditioning to take an application and wait outside in the hallway until their name was called to come back in.
Everyone seemed to have a bit of jitter to them. Some were walking back and forth trying to memorize all of lines they had been working on to deliver to the judges inside, while others were quietly humming the bars of music they decided on a few days before. I sat near
the doorway with my legs crossed and my mind racing.I couldn’t help thinking of all of the reasons why I shouldn’t be auditioning for this show, all of them leading back to the same conclusion: being nervous. I had all the requirements needed to take on this audition, which consisted of a one-minute monologue, and a 16-bar excerpt from as song, and it needed to be memorized.
The kicker here for me is that it needed to be performed, and in front of people who were judging it. One of the judges walked out into the hall with a clipboard listing everyone who was going to be auditioning. The judge happened to be the Assistant Director of the show, and my friend, Lindsey Sigler. Usually, I can always count on seeing her with a nice, bright, smile over her face, but this time she came out with a very serious, determined look upon her. “Ashley, you’re up” Ashley jumped in shock of being the first one called to go, giving her a sudden rush of nerves that could overcome anyone in her current situation.
Everyone watched as she slowly walked into the drama room door, and had it close behind her.A few minutes later she walked out with a discontent sort of look on her face, obviously showing that she didn’t know how she did with her performance, but didn’t seem very happy. Lindsey soon followed behind her, calling people in one by one for their audition: “Kyle. Ashton. La’Darian. ” All these people seem to be exiting back out of the room with the same face as the one before.
I wondered if I even
stood a chance of surviving in there. Then finally... it happened: “Daniel, your turn. ” I could feel all the blood drain from my face as I stood up, realizing that this was it, and thinking that I did not stand a chance.
Inside the drama room there was a small stage near the corner of the room, and in front of it were nothing more than a folding table with three people sitting behind it. Lindsey was one of them, along with the show’s Stage Manager, Josh Canupp, and also the Director, Ms. Neander. I walked up onto the stage and waited for them to say something.
“Can we have your application please? ” Ms. Neander asked me. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” I said a little loudly, hurrying to the table to correct what I thought may have been a huge mistake. I went back and almost tripped in my haste. “Are you ok? Josh had asked.
“Yea, yea, I’m fine, PERFECTLY fine! ” I said, trying to make it not seem obvious that I was freaking out inside, telling myself not to go through with this, but it didn’t seem to be believable enough for the judges. Ms. Neander looked at me with a little smile. “It’s ok to be little nervous Daniel,” she said, “I promise you are not the first one to come in here a little scared. Just take a deep breath and go for it. ” I stood there for a few seconds, filled my lungs with all the breath I could take in, which seemed to have given me a small sense of calm.
Then, I started.A few days
later the cast list was posted, and a huge crowd surrounded it as if it was made of gold. I finally made it to the front to take a look at it, and smiled gleefully...
I made the show! I was so happy that I let out a large roar of joy with all the others there that had made the cut. My bit of nerves I had before seemed be of been defeated by the pure feeling of accomplishment. The next four months was nothing but dancing, acting, and singing, and all of it seemed to have rushed by me. All of the work I had put into the show finally paid off, and I seemed to of never gotten my nerves up.Now the show was at its final curtain call.
Each clique of people that was cast in the show stepped up together to take their bows: the skaters, the thespians, the cheerleaders, the brainiacs, and finally the jocks, of which I was cast as one of them. Next up was the supporting roles, followed by all of the amazing lead roles that had performed. In the end, we all had acknowledged our crew in the booth for their superb technical work they had done during the performance. We received a standing ovation from the audience that seemed to last a century.Once they all had brought their cheer to a dull roar, the piano started playing. Hearing this soft melody could only mean one thing for me: it was time for me to sing.
I was awarded the opening line of the final song for my efforts in the show, and I couldn’t
have been happier! I belted my line and the people applauded; I had gained my fifteen minutes of fame. The majority of people in the world have stage fright at one point of another, some even think that it may be inevitable to avoid. It is surprising how calming it can be to just take in a deep breath and try to relax.
