In the breakup, I identified three types of ineffective listening: pseudo listening, stage huggers, and selective listening. Pseudo listening occurs when someone pretends to listen but is not fully paying attention. In one scene, Gary sits on the couch watching TV instead of listening to Brooke's request for help before their dinner guests arrive. He acts like he's acknowledging her words but is too distracted by the sports on TV. A stage hogger turns a conversation into a self-centered discussion. During a video game session with Brooke's date Mike, Gary constantly talks about his own gaming skills, making it all about him. Selective listening is when someone only responds to parts of a message that interest them. For example, after an unsuccessful attempt to make it up to Brooke, Gary and his friend Johnny O. are at a bar talking. Johnny O. i
...gnores everything Gary says except for the information about Brooke being with another guy. He becomes fixated on hunting down that guy, disregarding anything else Gary tries to communicate.
There are three types of listening responses that were observed in the movie: supporting, advising, and judging. Supporting is demonstrated when someone expresses concern or interest towards another person. A scene in the movie depicts Gary and Brooke's family having dinner together, during which Dennis (Agar's Brother) discusses his dreams in the touring business. Richard (Brook's Brother) shows support by applauding and agreeing with Dennis because he shares the same passion for singing. Richard's supportive responses in this scene consist of praise and agreement. Advising occurs when a person tries to help by proposing a solution or giving advice. After Gary and Brooke hav
a disastrous game night, their friend and realtor, Irrigable, advises them to sell their condo and go their separate ways, since they both agreed that they wouldn't get back together. Judging is when someone shares their personal thoughts about something. In the movie, Dennis judges Gary for losing the condo due to his breakup with Brooke. Dennis could have approached Gary with questions instead of immediately passing judgment, which would have made the situation less abrupt. Overall, the supporting and advising responses shown in the movie were appropriate and effective. Moving on to Part Two, the character Brooke demonstrates a strong understanding of the listening process, but lacks proficiency in responding.
Instead of contemplating her emotions, she takes action to intentionally disturb the other person. I believe she has room for improvement in terms of comprehension and response. By devoting more time to fully comprehend, she will likely have the ability to react appropriately. Moving on to my personal listening skills, I consider myself an adequate listener. Typically, I make an effort to be receptive and attentive to everyone. However, when I'm irritated or fatigued, I may struggle with active listening. If I catch myself not paying attention, I have to remind myself to refocus. Overall, I think I excel as a listener when I genuinely want to be one.
