What is Transcription?
Transcription is the process of transforming speech or audio recordings into written text. It involves taking an oral or aural recording and writing it down in a form that can be used for further analysis or to create documents. Transcription is commonly used in fields such as law, medicine, journalism, market research, academia, media production and even non-academic settings like interviews. Transcription can be done manually by a professional transcriber listening carefully to the recorded audio or video and typing out each word they hear verbatim onto paper or using transcription software on a computer. Manual transcription takes more time than automated transcription because it requires careful listening and accuracy in order to capture all of the nuances of the recording accurately. When done manually, transcriptions are most commonly formatted with two columns: one for speaker identification (for multiple speakers) and one for actual spoken words. This allows for easy reading by separating who said what from what was actually saidallowing readers to easily follow along with conversations between multiple people. Automated transcription often uses voice recognition technology which has come a long way in recent years but still isn’t as accurate as manual transcription when it comes to capturing nuanced speech patterns like tone inflection, pauses and other vocalizations. Regardless of how it’s done however; Transcription remains an invaluable tool that helps make conversations accessible to larger audiences in order to better understand themmaking them easier to analyze and draw future conclusions fromwhether related to language learning, research data collection or just plain entertainment purposes.
