What is The Exceptional Learner?
The Exceptional Learner is a term used to describe a student who has special needs or abilities that exceed the expectations of their peers. They may have physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and/or behavioral challenges that make it difficult for them to succeed in traditional classroom settings. These students require specialized attention and approaches to education in order to maximize their potential. The Exceptional Learner is often identified through assessment processes such as psychological testing and other procedures designed to evaluate the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Once these needs are identified, educators can use specialized strategies and resources to help the student reach their full potential. Strategies can include accommodations such as providing extra time for tests or assignments; modifications of tasks; individualized instruction; and individualized instruction materials tailored for each learner’s needs. In addition to providing accommodations and modifications in the classroom, teachers should also strive to create a supportive environment in which all students feel welcomed and respected regardless of ability level. This includes fostering an atmosphere of acceptance where everyone has an equal opportunity for success regardless of his or her level of ability. It also involves creating a safe learning environment free from bullying or teasing due to differences between learners. In order for The Exceptional Learner program to be successful, it must have support from all stakeholders including parents/caregivers, administrators, teachers, counselors/social workers/psychologists and community members who can provide support services when needed. With the right combination of strategies tailored towards each student’s unique abilities coupled with appropriate support services The Exceptional Learner can experience success at school as well as fulfillment outside of the classroom setting throughout their life journey.
