What is Spinal Cord?
A spinal cord injury is a serious condition that can have life-changing effects. It occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord, which is the main bundle of nerves that runs down the length of the back and connects to different parts of the body. This type of injury can lead to paralysis, loss of sensation, and difficulty controlling bodily functions. Recovery from a spinal cord injury often requires long-term physical therapy, rehabilitative care, and lifestyle changes. The causes of a spinal cord injury vary but common causes may include traumatic events such as car accidents or falls, diseases such as polio or meningitis, as well as medical procedures involving surgical instruments. Regardless of what caused it, a spinal cord injury has significant implications for health and quality of life. Immediately after an accident or incident that results in a spinal cord injury there may be pain and swelling at the site due to inflammation from tissue damage. Other symptoms may include loss of sensation or movement in certain areas below the site where damage occurred due to disrupted nerve signals between the brain and body parts. In some cases even psychological issues such as depression or anxiety can result due to this type of trauma. In order for effective treatment for a spinal cord injury to begin it must first be diagnosed by doctors who specialize in this field through tests such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
