What is Solution Focused Brief Therapy?
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a type of therapy that focuses on solutions rather than on problems. This form of therapy uses an approach to helping individuals identify and achieve their desired outcomes in life by focusing on the present and future, rather than the past. In SFBT, the therapist helps the client set goals for change and works with them to create strategies to reach those goals. The therapist also encourages the client to focus on their strengths and resources rather than their limitations or problems. This type of therapy also emphasizes using questions as a way of exploring solutions – instead of asking why questions, which can often lead to negative thinking or ruminating over past events, SFBT focuses more on how questions which focus on future possibilities and potential solutions. The goal of SFBT is to help clients find creative solutions for their problems in order to create lasting positive change in their life. It has been used effectively for a wide range of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorders, relationship difficulties, and more. Compared with other forms of psychotherapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), SFBT is typically much shorter in duration due its focus on solution-oriented techniques rather than longer periods spent discussing one’s past experiences or trying to uncover underlying psychological issues. In addition, because it does not require detailed explanations about why certain behaviors occur or deep exploration into one’s past experiences it can be seen as less intimidating or overwhelming compared with other forms of talk therapy. Overall Solution Focused Brief Therapy offers a supportive and non-judgmental environment where clients can work towards creating meaningful change in their lives while being encouraged by their therapist every step along the way.
