What is Signs And Symptoms Of Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a condition in which the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood become abnormally low. It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia so that you can quickly take steps to prevent more serious complications.Common signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia include: ¢ feeling shaky or weak; ¢ dizziness or lightheadedness; ¢ confusion; ¢ feeling anxious, irritable, or moody; ¢ sweating; ¢ heart palpitations; ¢ blurred vision; and/or ¢ hunger. Other less common symptoms can include nausea, headaches, paleness of skin and lips, tingling in the mouth area (in some cases), clumsiness or difficulty concentrating. In extreme cases, seizures and coma may occur. If left untreated for too long it can cause long-term damage to organs such as the brain and heart as well as major damage to other body systems. If you experience any of these signs and symptoms it is important that you immediately check your blood sugar level with a glucose meter or test strip. If your level is below 70 mg/dL then it’s time to take action. The first step should be consuming a quick-acting carbohydrate such as fruit juice, regular soda, hard candy or glucose tablets which will raise your blood sugar back up into an acceptable range quickly. After that you should eat something more substantial like a sandwich which will provide more sustained energy over time until your next meal. Be sure to track your glucose levels throughout this process so that you know when they are back in an acceptable range before returning to normal activity.
