What is Poor Self Esteem?
Poor self-esteem is a serious problem that can affect people of all ages. It can cause a person to doubt their own capabilities, feel inadequate, and even lead to depression. Self-esteem is built through positive experiences with family, friends, teachers and peers and can be undermined by negative experiences or messages from those around us. Low self-esteem impacts our lives in many ways, such as our academic performance, relationships with others, job opportunities and even physical health. First of all, it’s important to understand the root causes of poor self-esteem. Negative messages from parents or other authority figures may lead to feelings of inadequacy or failure in children which may follow them into adulthood. A lack of positive reinforcement or a feeling that one’s achievements are not appreciated can also have an impact on one’s sense of worthiness. Bullying or teasing by peers can also be damaging; when faced with repeated criticism from those we respect it is easy for us to start believing the negative things being said about us. It is possible for someone with poor self-esteem to change this perception if they receive help and support from family members, counselors and therapists who are skilled in working with these issues. Talking openly about how one feels helps identify underlying problems which need addressing; often it comes down to simply boosting someone’s confidence so they can see how capable they really are. Counseling sessions provide an opportunity for people with low self-esteem to challenge the negative beliefs they have about themselves replacing them instead with more positive ones that are more accurate reflections of reality. In addition there are certain practical steps that people suffering from low self-worth can take; setting realistic goals according to individual strengths helps build confidence while engaging in activities that promote success such as sports or volunteering gives individuals a sense of accomplishment which boosts morale further still. Ultimately though it boils down having a greater appreciation for oneself learning how accept compliments graciously rather than downplay achievement and having the courage stand up for what you believe in despite what others might think – these skills will go far towards improving anyone’s sense of worthiness.
