What is Physical Geography?
Physical Geography is a branch of geography which studies the physical features of the Earth and its atmosphere, including landforms, climate, soils, vegetation, rivers and oceans. It also includes the study of how human activity affects these features. Physical geography covers a wide range of topics such as geomorphology (the study of landforms), meteorology (the study of weather), hydrology (the study of water) and biogeography (the study of plants and animals). Additionally, physical geography encompasses the investigation of global environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.Physical geography uses tools from both the sciences and humanities to investigate various phenomena on our planet’s surface. For example, scientists use remote sensing technology to observe changes in vegetation from satellites in space while historians examine ancient texts to uncover past climates. In addition to traditional methods such as maps or aerial photographs, modern physical geographers are increasingly taking advantage of new technologies like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data collection and analysis. GIS allows researchers to combine spatial information with other types data quickly and accurately in order to better understand relationships between different geographical factors. The importance that physical geography plays in understanding current global trends cannot be overstated. A greater understanding how human activities affect our environment can help us make more informed decisions about how we manage resources in order protect fragile ecosystems around the world. Physical geographers are playing an increasingly important role in helping us understand our changing world so that we can live sustainably into future generations.
