What is Modified Radical Mastectomy?
A modified radical mastectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat cancer in the breast. It is the removal of the entire breast, including some of the lymph nodes under the arm and chest muscles near the breast. This type of surgery is often recommended when cancer has spread beyond the walls of the ducts and lobules within a woman’s breast or if there is a high risk for relapse after other treatments. The goal of this surgery is to remove all diseased tissue from around and within the affected area, while preserving surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible. After an initial incision made near or around the nipple, surgeons will often use a combination of surgical tools to carefully remove any visible tumors or cancerous cells that may be present. This includes removing some nearby lymph nodes as well as chest muscles located directly beneath or behind your breasts. In some cases, patients may also require radiation therapy following a modified radical mastectomy in order to ensure that all remaining cancer cells have been destroyed. Depending on how far along your diagnosis is, you may also need additional chemotherapy treatments or hormone therapy in order to help prevent recurrence. If you are considering having a modified radical mastectomy performed, it’s important to discuss your options with your doctor thoroughly so that you can make an informed decision about what treatment plan best fits your needs and lifestyle goals. Your doctor can also provide information about potential risks associated with this type of surgery so that you can weigh them against potential benefits when making your decision.
