Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German writer, statesman, artist, scientist, and philosopher. He is considered one of the greatest minds in Western literature and art. He was born in Frankfurt am Main on August 28th 1749.Goethe’s works ranged from poetry to plays to novels and scientific treatises. His most famous works are Faust (1808) and The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774). He was an accomplished poet whose work was influential during the Romantic period. In addition to his writing career, Goethe also held important positions in government including minister of finance for the duchy of Weimar-Jena from 1807 until 1832.Goethe’s philosophy focused on exploring the human experience through both science and art. He believed that knowledge derived from observation should be combined with imaginative insight to gain a deeper understanding of life’s mysteries and complexities. This approach was known as Goethean Science or Goethianism, which sought to unify all forms of knowledge into one harmonious system that could be used for practical purposes.Throughout his life, Goethe strove to understand what it meant to be human in a world filled with beauty, pain, suffering, love, creativity, conflict and joy. His writings were often informed by his own experiences as he sought out life’s meaning among its myriad forms.
