What is Healthy People 2010?

Healthy People 2010 is a national initiative in the United States to improve public health by setting and attaining specific health objectives. The program was launched in 2000 with 10 focus areas, including increasing life expectancy, reducing infant mortality, eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care, preventing substance abuse, promoting mental health and well-being, improving access to preventive services such as immunizations and screenings for cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS. It also aims to reduce illness from environmental hazards like air pollution and hazardous waste sites.The goals of Healthy People 2010 are ambitious: increase life expectancy to 78 years; reduce infant mortality rate to 6 per 1 000 live births; eliminate racial disparity in healthcare delivery; reduce teenage pregnancy rate by one third; encourage physical activity among people aged 12 21 years old; increase use of preventive medical care services among uninsured persons; reduce prevalence of smoking among adults 18 24 years old; reduce new cases of AIDS by one half; cut alcohol-related deaths by one quarter. The programs seeks to achieve these goals through education on healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious food, exercising regularly and avoiding risky behavior (e.g., tobacco use). Other strategies include working with state governments on policy changes that promote healthier lifestyles (e.g., restrictions on smoking in public places); providing financial incentives for individuals who complete prevention activities (i.e., healthy living workshops or disease management classes); research funding for obesity or diabetes interventions at universities across the nation; increased spending on public campaigns about exercise or nutrition information targeted towards teens or seniors etc.. In order for Healthy People 2010’s efforts to be successful it needs support from all sectors government agencies at all levels, business owners/employers, healthcare providers/insurers, educators/trainers/coaches etc.. Everyone must work together toward positive change if we want our children’s future generations continue leading longer lives filled with good health.
