What is Functional Behavior Assessment?
A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a process of gathering information to identify the function of a student’s problem behavior and to develop strategies that address the behavior. The FBA process begins by collecting data about the problem behaviors and any potential antecedents or consequences associated with these behaviors. This can be done through interviews, direct observations, review of records, and analysis of existing data sources. Once collected, this data can then be used to formulate hypotheses about why the problem behavior is occurring. It is important for all stakeholders involved in addressing the student’s behavior to participate in this process as each individual may provide unique insight into possible causes or functions of the behavior. After forming hypotheses about why a particular problem behavior occurs, an intervention plan should be developed that targets those specific functions in order to reduce or eliminate them over time. This intervention should include positive reinforcement techniques such as praise and rewards for appropriate behaviors as well as structured consequences for inappropriate behaviors. Additionally, proactive strategies such as teaching appropriate skills that serve similar functions to those expressed by the target behaviors should also be considered when developing this plan. Finally, it is important for all stakeholders involved in implementing this intervention plan to continually monitor its effectiveness over time and make necessary modifications based on their observations and assessments of how well it is working for each individual student being served. By doing so, an effective FBA can help ensure that students receive tailored interventions designed specifically to address their individual needs which can lead not only to improved academic outcomes but also social-emotional success both inside and outside of school settings.
