What is Ethnic Minority Groups?
Ethnic minorities in the United States are people whose racial or ethnic identity is different from the majority population. This includes African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asian-Americans. These groups have experienced a long history of discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion from mainstream society in the US.The history of ethnic minority groups in the US goes back to colonial times when European settlers came to North America and brought with them their own culture and traditions. In addition to this influx of immigrants, people were brought over as slaves from Africa to work on plantations. The native inhabitants had their land taken away by Europeans who considered them inferior due to their race or ethnicity. This led to a long period of oppression for these communities which continues today in different forms such as segregation, lack of access to education and housing opportunities, police brutality towards black individuals, and other forms of systemic racism. In recent years there has been an increasing recognition that minority rights need to be protected and respected in order for our society to be fair and just for all its citizens. To that end there have been various laws passed such as The Fair Housing Act which prohibits discrimination against people based on race or national origin when it comes to renting or buying a home; The Voting Rights Act which protects individuals’ right to vote regardless of race; The Civil Rights Act which makes it illegal for employers or schools to discriminate based on race; and many others that help protect individuals’ civil rights no matter what their ethnicity is. Despite these protections there are still disparities between minority populations compared with white populations across many areas such as education levels, poverty rates, health care access, employment opportunities etc.
