What is Emotional Self Regulation?
Emotional self-regulation is the ability to manage one’s emotions in a healthy and productive manner. It involves understanding our emotions, being able to recognize signs of distress, and using coping skills to keep ourselves from becoming overwhelmed. Being able to regulate our emotions is an important life skill that can help us better manage stress, maintain relationships, improve communication and conflict resolution skills, increase productivity, and achieve goals.One key aspect of emotional self-regulation is being able to recognize when we are feeling distressed or overwhelmed. This means noticing physical sensations such as increased heart rate or feeling tense as well as mental reactions such as feelings of anger or sadness. Once we become aware that we are feeling overwhelmed it allows us to take steps towards calming ourselves down before the situation spirals out of control. Another important aspect of emotional self-regulation is having access to a variety of coping skills that can be used in different situations. These might include mindful breathing techniques like 4-7-8 breathing or progressive muscle relaxation, body scans where you focus on releasing tension throughout your body part by part, thought reframing where you challenge negative automatic thoughts with positive interpretations, journaling or talking with someone about your feelings in order to gain perspective on the situation at hand. Different tools may work for different people so it’s important for individuals to experiment with different methods until they find what works best for them. Finally once we have identified our distress signals and have access strategies for calming down it’s important that we practice these regularly so that they become ingrained habits when faced with difficult situations in the future.
