What is Debate?
Debate is an activity that has been around for centuries and involves two or more people making arguments in favor of their own point of view. It typically involves the exchange of ideas, arguments, and evidence in order to convince the other party or audience to accept one’s opinion. Debate can be done formally, with the structure of a debate tournament or informally between two friends. There are many different types of debates such as public speaking, policy debating, Lincoln-Douglas debating, parliamentary debating, extemporaneous speaking and many more. Debate is beneficial because it forces one to think critically about their beliefs and opinions by forcing them to confront opposing opinions head on. Debate also encourages research and understanding before forming a point of view on any given topic while providing an opportunity for individuals who may have weaker communication skills to improve upon them. Additionally, debate allows individuals the opportunity to practice negotiation skills which can be useful in many aspects of life outside debate itself. The rules of debate vary depending on the format but typically involve each participant taking turns presenting their argument before having time for rebuttals from both sides followed by a conclusion from each side at the end. This allows each party to better understand where they stand on an issue while being able to hear different perspectives that they may not have thought about previously.
