What is Criminology?
Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminal behavior, including its causes, responses by law enforcement, and methods of prevention. It is a sub-field of sociology that focuses on understanding why people commit crimes, how laws are enforced, and how to prevent or reduce criminal activity. Criminologists use research techniques such as surveys and statistical analysis to analyze data related to crime in order to gain better insights into the relationships between offenders and victims, different types of criminals, and societal trends in crime rates. They also examine changes in policy over time in an effort to understand which approaches work best for reducing or controlling certain types of crime. The main goals of criminology are twofold: firstly, the investigation of why some members of society break laws while others do not; secondly, how these violations can be prevented or reduced through interventions such as legislation or social programs. As a result criminologists often draw upon psychological theories as well as socio-economic factors when attempting to make sense out of unlawful behavior. Additionally they may employ other fields such as economics (to investigate financial incentives for criminal activities), political science (to consider issues around public safety) and biology (to explore genetic influences). Furthermore criminologists will often look at historical events in order to gain a more comprehensive view on modern day criminality.Criminology has had an immense impact on our societies since its inception centuries ago; from influencing government policies towards offences like drug use all the way up through providing improved methods for police investigations into serious crimes such as murder or rape. Today’s advances in technology have provided researchers with new tools allowing them access information faster than ever before making it even easier for them to analyze patterns when it comes down investigating individuals who might be involved with strange activities like terrorism or cybercrime. Ultimately this information helps inform us about current happenings within our communities so we can take steps towards ensuring safer neighborhoods throughout our cities across world wide.
