What is Consciousness?
Consciousness is the awareness of one’s own thoughts, feelings and experiences. It is a state of being aware of one’s environment, including the physical world around us, as well as the mental and emotional states present within us. Consciousness allows us to think, reason, assess our environment, communicate with others and make decisions. In essence, it gives us our sense of self and identity. The study of consciousness has been an area of fascination for centuries. Philosophers have long debated what it is exactly that makes up consciousness, how we acquire it, and how to measure or quantify it. Neuroscientists have studied the brain in an attempt to understand the biological basis for consciousness while psychologists have studied how people use their conscious minds when making decisions or solving problems. Research into consciousness has revealed many fascinating findings such as that certain areas in the brain are associated with specific types of conscious experience or that changes in our environment can alter our levels of consciousness in certain ways. Despite all this research however there still remains much mystery surrounding this phenomenon we call consciousness; what its exact nature is and why some creatures seem to possess higher levels than others remain topics largely unknown at this time. As technology continues to improve we can expect further advances in understanding this elusive aspect of human existence but until then we can only speculate about its true nature and purpose.
