What is Cognitive?
Cognitive strategies are the methods used to help people improve their thinking and problem-solving skills. They involve the use of mental processes such as memory, attention, reasoning and creativity to better understand and process information. Cognitive strategies can be used in a variety of situations, from everyday life to school or work settings. One example of a cognitive strategy is chunking. Chunking involves breaking down complex problems into smaller chunks that are easier to solve. This can make it easier to remember important details from a lecture or text passage, as well as help improve comprehension by helping the learner categorize information into manageable chunks. By chunking tasks into smaller pieces, learners can find it easier to focus on one part at a time rather than trying to tackle the entire task all at oncewhich can cause frustration and confusion leading to decreased performance. Another cognitive strategy is visualization. Visualization involves creating mental images of concepts or events that you have learned about in order to better understand them and remember them more easily. For example, if you’re studying history, visualizing events that took place during certain periods may help you recall facts more accurately when taking tests or writing papers on the subject matter. Visualization techniques are also useful for remembering sequences of numbers or items in order lists so they can be recalled quickly when needed. Cognitive strategies can also involve self-talktalking out loud while working on an activityto keep focused and motivated until completion of a task or goal is achieved (eustress). Self-talk helps keep track of progress made on tasks by allowing learners to periodically evaluate their own performance which encourages further learning and improved results overall due its positive reinforcement qualities (self-efficacy). Self-talk also serves as an outlet for voicing frustrations which may be blocking progress towards completing tasks; this has been found helpful for managing stressful situations both mentally and emotionally (resilience). Overall, cognitive strategies are essential tools for improving problem solving skills, learning new concepts faster, remembering information with greater accuracy, staying focused on goals despite setbacks/challenges faced along the wayall key elements required for successful navigation through life’s many obstaclesmaking them invaluable assets.
