What is Buddhism?
Buddhism is an ancient Eastern religion founded by Siddhartha Gautama in the sixth century B.C.E. Buddhism combines aspects of Hinduism, Taoism, and Confucianism and has become a major world religion with over 500 million adherents worldwide. The core teachings of Buddhism involve the Four Noble Truths: suffering exists; suffering is caused by craving and attachment; there is a possibility to end suffering; and this can be accomplished through the Eightfold Path of Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration. The goal of Buddhism is to achieve enlightenmentthe realization that all life is interconnectednessand ultimately Nirvana (or liberation) from the cycle of birth and death (samsara). To reach enlightenment Buddhists must follow the Noble Eightfold Path which involves being mindful in thought speech action and lifestyle as well as cultivating wisdom understanding non-attachment compassion generosity and virtue.
