What is Black Widow Spider?
The Black Widow Spider is one of the most feared spiders in the world. Its shiny black body and bright red hourglass-shaped mark on its abdomen make it easy to recognize. Although these spiders are not aggressive and rarely bite humans, their venom can be very dangerous if a person is bitten. Black Widow Spiders are found all over the world, but they are most common in North America. They usually live in dark, dry places such as wood piles, under rocks or logs, or inside old rodent burrows. These spiders feed on insects like flies and mosquitoes which they catch with their web-building skills. The female Black Widow has an especially large web which she uses to capture her prey. The webs of these spiders can be up to two meters in diameter. The name Black Widow comes from the fact that female Black Widows are known to eat their mates after mating. This behavior is rare though, and only happens when food is scarce for the spider or she feels threatened by her mate. Even though this behavior has given them a bad reputation, it’s important to remember that these spiders try to avoid contact with humans as much as possible. If you do come into contact with a Black Widow Spider there are some steps you can take to protect yourself: wear gloves when handling outdoor items like woodpiles or logs where Black Widows may be hiding; inspect your clothing for any signs of a spider before putting it on; avoid areas (especially dark places) where you know there could be a nest of these spiders; always keep your eyes open when outside; don’t reach into dark crevices without first looking into them. Finally, if you’re bitten by one of these spiders seek medical attention immediately – even though the bites may look minor they still have potent venom which can cause serious illness if not treated quickly enough. Despite their reputation as dangerous creatures, Black Widow Spiders play an important role in our environment by keeping insect populations at bay and helping reduce disease transmission from insects like mosquitoes carrying diseases such as malaria or Zika virus. So next time you encounter one of these fearsome arachnids take a moment to appreciate how amazing they really are.
