What is African American Males?
African American males are one of the most marginalized groups in the United States. From birth, African American males face an uphill battle due to systemic racism and implicit bias that puts them at a disadvantage. African Americans living in poverty are more likely to have lower educational attainment, worse health outcomes, higher rates of incarceration, and fewer job opportunities than their white counterparts. Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and inequity among African American males; however, many schools fail to provide adequate resources for this population. Too often, young black men fall behind in school because they don’t receive the proper support or guidance from teachers or administrators. As a result, they lack the necessary skills to compete with their peers and secure gainful employment upon graduation.Though there are many challenges facing African American males today, there is much potential for progress if we focus our efforts on improving educational opportunities and providing support systems that truly address this population’s unique needs. Programs that focus on fostering self-esteem through mentoring can have lasting effects on academic performance as well as social-emotional health. More access to higher education can open doors to better job prospects which can lead to greater economic stability within these communities. Additionally, initiatives that facilitate access to mental health services can create a space for young men struggling with depression or anxiety caused by racism or other forms of trauma they face daily due to systemic oppression. We must also recognize the importance of listening instead of speaking over marginalized voicesparticularly those of African American menin order to create meaningful solutions together as members of our society at large. To make real progress towards racial equity, we must work together collaboratively by recognizing our differences yet celebrating what unites us: humanity itself.
