In my opinion, religion plays a major in American culture by unveiling the truth to those things that seem unclear. The most appropriate role of religion should be allowing freedom of expression. Supporters of the belief that whatever religion holds as right and just is always just and right argue that the truth must always be articulated. They further claim that the truth has to be “self-evident”. I strongly agree with Emanuel Kant’s allegations that people have to be free to think by themselves and should not be forced or directed by anyone. In my thoughts however, modernity has presented people with the choice to stand-in for what they believe in. Modernity has thus contributed greatly to the current perspectives of people. Culture is the way people undertake their daily activities, thus, it is logical to argue that the American cultu
...re is all about modernity as this is what they believe in.
Religion and politics
In my point of view, religion plays a very important role in politics. I strongly agree with the fact that religion shapes politics specifically in terms of ideologies. Different views have been given concerning the relationship between religion and politics. For instance, I contend that Thomas Jefferson’s stand on religion and politics is very important in the American experience. His argument that religion is more of particular but not neutral is applicable in the modern world. On the other hand, Roger William contends that if the government, in any case, extends a helping hand to religion, it influences and corrupts it. I strongly believe that religion and politics are parallel in the angle that politics will never separate itself from religion. It
is my observation that when talking about democracy, religion will always be involved. Religion is concerned with good governance and leadership including transparency. Thus, regardless of the fact that religion and politics are headed in the same direction, they use different ideologies on different platforms.
Religion and social policy
I believe that religion also has a major role in social policy. Social scientists view religion as a major element of socialization. In my opinion, religion forms the personality of the individual. The reasoning and behavior are derived from the belief one has. Social scientists often observe the manner in which religion can be linked to elements of socialization. The fact that socializing is all about human continuity implies that religion can be an element of socialization. I believe that this is the main reason as to why religion is tasked to inculcate positive values and virtues in believers. For instance, religion has the role of unveiling the metaphysical to human as well as being a spiritual guide through the provision of spiritual nourishment.
I strongly agree with the fact that religion is concerned with making the world a better place for humankind. It is concerned with the environment as it offers views and solutions on how to better improve the environment as evidenced in taking care of all the living things and sustaining the environment. Social scientists too are concerned with the same issues. Social cannot stand by itself if religious ethics is absent.
Schools are one of the main agents of socialization that allows students to meet and socialize. In my contemplations, a person is considered social if he/she is able to intermingle well with others and at
the same time possess the necessary skills to effectively communicate his/her views and fears. Religion at great extents helps one to distinguish between the evil and the good. I believe that it is through religion that one is taught how to distinguish “good” from “bad”. For instance, religion is highly concerned with the well-being of individuals as evidenced in enlightening on the meaning of life by for instance addressing the issue of abortions and carrying out general medical interventions. The reasoning people have as well as the perspectives they have were at one time formed. Since it is evident that religion motivates morals, it is also rational to argue that religion is social and social is religion.
Religion and personal life or piety and practice
Conscience claims that religion is private and corporate. My view is that religion should be treated as private and it should be protected as the right of private individuals. The religious actions have been limited to a specific sphere. This sphere is the metaphysical and spiritual world. One can argue that religion is built on the basis of belief and conduct. Belief refers to what a person strongly holds as truth. On the other hand, conduct is the person’s behavior. I believe individual personality is formed by belief and conduct. A person’s belief should not affect the other. According to Sam Harris, religion is ambivalent, meaning that it is not violent. But in some accession, people use heiress to justify their own claims after causing violence. At times religion motivates violence. This is due to the perception based on religion grounds that behind this life lays another great life. I strongly agree
with the argument that these perspectives depict that a person’s religion practice should only be private as it augers well with the universal common good.
