The abortion debate is a long-standing and highly controversial topic in the United States. On one side of the argument, there are those who believe that women should have the right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy. Proponents of this view point out that it’s their body and thus their choice what they do with it, as well as cite religious beliefs that life begins at conception and therefore abortions are taking away innocent lives. Those on the opposing side argue that while some abortions may be justified in certain cases such as rape or incest, most are immoral because they end an unborn child’s life before it has had a chance to develop fully into a person. This group also believes that even if the mother’s health is at stake, she still has other options such as adoption rather than resorting to abortion. No matter which position someone takes on this issue, both sides can agree that any decision regarding abortion must be made with caution and thoughtfulness after considering all relevant factors involved. It is important for people from both perspectives to keep an open mind when discussing this issue so as to gain insight into each other’s views without being hurtful or judgmental about them. Everyone should strive for respect no matter how strongly they feel about something since ultimately we all want what’s best for our society and its inhabitants alike.
