When encountering a nurse, hospice nursing is not typically the first thing that would be thought of.
The field of hospice nursing involves a broad range of responsibilities that may not be fully understood by many individuals. Hospice nurses have specialized roles, including evaluating the elderly's state, supervising their well-being, and working alongside medical professionals. Their duties are especially important since patients receiving hospice care are typically near the end of life. As a result, hospice nurses administer palliative medications primarily for pain relief rather than disease treatment.

Hospice nurses possess remarkable patience and compassionate temperament in providing care, beyond what is expected of private duty nurses. While some may perceive their role as caring for individuals nearing the end of life, they approach it differently. They perceive their patients as still living and provide care that mirrors that given by family members. The Philippines only recently adopted hospice care, with its beginnings in 2003 when the president of the International Hospice Institute in Washington D. initiated its introduction.
Dr. Josephine Magno, a Filipino, brought a new aspect of care to the country, resulting in 23 institutions and 520 service providers as of 2007.

is fully behind these institutions for the elderly with the goal of establishing a holistic atmosphere that attends to Filipinos' and their families' physical, social, medical, psychological, and spiritual needs. In our country, both the medical team and families take part in developing treatment plans.
Additionally, the provider of the hospice facility takes care of them, even if the hospice care providers are not necessarily medical experts. With proper training, anyone with a caring heart for the sick can participate in hospice care delivery. End-of-life matters are delicate and necessitate strength and dedication when assisting patients towards a peaceful transition.
Many hospice care facilities in the Philippines faced a challenge which they addressed by collaborating with international organizations. This involved providing intensive training to their members and other volunteers abroad. While private groups generally oversee organizations providing hospice care in the country, the government recommends that health workers such as barangay health workers also receive training to become part of the hospice team. This would enable them to administer palliative treatment and deliver hospice care to elderly individuals in their own vicinity.
