Fear is often portrayed negatively in media, but in real life, it’s a complex emotion. Many people enjoy scaring themselves on purpose, but the same things, like movies, rollercoasters, and haunted houses, that they use to do this can be traumatizing for other people. Different people have different chemical fear reactions, because for some people, the dopamine released by fear takes longer to be processed by the brain. People have been scaring themselves for centuries, but it only recently became a big business, and we now know more about fear than ever, including that it can be either innate or learned.
