The theme of the story is that bigotry affects us progressively more as we age, but anyone, even the children who still haven’t internalized it, can be a victim of it. Kezia, more immature than her peers, disregards the social norms set in place by the other children and by the adults of the town, which ask that she not speak to the Kelveys. Kezia’s aunt takes out her frustrations about a personal issue on the Kelveys, because of her bigotry, demonstrating how the rudeness the school children have for the poor ripens into hatred over the years.
