The gains that were made in these early decades of the policy of desegregation included “elaborate student assignment plans,” the mixing of black, Hispanic and white students, and a rapid narrowing of the achievement gap (Garland, paragraphs 4 and 6).

I find it very interesting and important that during the first few decades of desegregation, the rapid rate at which the achievement gap was closed. It makes me question why we would ever go back to segregated schools.
