The first paragraph is interesting because it sets up the entire speech. It is important because it hints at Lincoln’s disappointment in that state of the country. It refers to “better times” in a way. It makes me wonder though, how dedicated the founding fathers were to the idea that all men are created equal. Lincoln says they were, but the equality the founding father’s worked towards was for white men, not for women or black people or Native Americans.
