In paragraphs 15-20, the justices’ argue that “separate but equal” is inherently unequal. In this argument, they look at “the effect of segregation itself on public education” and not just “tangible factors” (paragraph 15). The justices’ say that “education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments” and that “it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied t he opportunity of an education” (paragraph 17). They then look at two other cases, Sweatt v Painter and McLaurin v Oklahoma State Regents, and decide that there are not equal educational opportunities for the minority group in public schools with separate schools (paragraphs 18-19). They then discuss the psychological effect that segregated schools have on black children.

I find paragraph 20 very interesting because this is something that is being researched today, which just shows that things have not changed since this court case. There is research out there today that shows that students of color will do worse on tests when they are asked to bubble in their race. The inferiority complex is still heavily prevalent today and needs to be addressed so that the educational system can change to create equal opportunity and equal expectations for all students.

This text is similar to other texts read in this textbook in that they all have something to do with justice! It is different though because this text spans decades of court cases and opinions which makes it a little more memorable.

The struggle for freedom is an ongoing process that we can see still happening today and that we can directly link and track to movements and issues today.
