The Censorship Division is not ‘particularly careful’ because demand for censors is so high that no one checks the legitimacy of the candidates. Even if one of the censors had hidden internal motives in the form of intercepting his own letter, the Censorship Department knows how unlikely that is, and is willing to risk a few lost letters for all the letters the censors will uncover.

Juan was living in an oppressive society where information was heavily censored. Upon receiving information on the whereabouts of Mariana, a woman he cared about, he felt overjoyed and wrote her a letter. While he initially believed that the contents were innocuous, he began having doubts and felt that there may be something that will raise the censors’ suspicions.

In order to get the letter to Mariana, he had a plan to apply and work in the Censorship Division in the post office. He got the job and worked his way up. He was focused on his work and even reported a fellow coworker to his superiors who tried to organize a strike.

As he continued moving his way up in the Censorship Division, he began losing sight of his original mission to try to get the letter to Mariana. He was so focused on censoring letters and information that when he got ahold of his letter to Mariana, he censored it without thought. He was then executed the next day after going through this entire process. In the end, his focus on his censorship work brought him to his demise.
