a) Each person depicted in image 1 have different positions regarding the Civil war. Each want the best for the US though.
b) The artist may have wanted to convey that there needs to be a middle ground in order to not tear apart the US. However, I think this view is dangerous and we can see it today too. There is no middle ground for issues related to basic rights.

The struggle for freedom has not really changed. Lincoln was perceived as a martyr and savior to those who needed freeing. He has since became a symbol for those struggling for freedom because he was a very important, foundational figure in the struggle for civil rights.
