Kennedy uses charged and emotional language in his speech to unite America and her allies against the country’s enemies. By associating negative emotional language with nuclear war, he builds on the fear of the Soviet Union the audience already has, and by using language that encourages unity, he employs this fear to bring people closer together against a common foe. In other words, he takes their fear and uses it to his benefit by associating it with the positive emotion of unity.
