Page 221: Analyze Craft and Structure
Exercise 1
Step 1
1 of 1
Most of the poem “Fences” is enjambed, save for the last two lines when the mother stops the child from running onto the tourists’ beach, saying “It’s their beach. It’s their beach.”
Structuring the poem like this allows the reader to experience a similar feeling to the child in the poem.
The enjambed lines make the poem flow smoothly, the lines blending into one another, easily carrying the reader down the page. However, the mother’s words end in a full stop after just one line, and the reader is brought to a similar abrupt halt to the child the words are addressed to.
