Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a giant insect. His family is disturbed by his appearance, and he almost immediately loses his job. Housebound, Gregor is taken care of mostly by his sister, Grete. While initially this brings them closer, Grete soon starts to resent the pain Gregor is causing her and the rest of the family. The additional stress of financial trouble, plus three boarders declaring they will not pay rent, after they see Gregor, pushes Grete to declare the family has to get rid of Gregor. Gregor dies the next morning.
