STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I hail from a family of doctors. From my early childhood, my frequent visits to the hospital (run by my grandfather) have had an impact on me. As a ten year old boy, I once walked into the X-ray room and was thoroughly fascinated by the machines, which were huge, when compared to my tiny self. Since then my fascination and interest in medical equipments and instruments have been growing day by day. I have always believed that every moment in life is a learning experience & I’m proud to say my learning experience till date has been with good educators.

Mathematics has always been my forte & science has been my fascination. I have always tried to perform & out-perform in these subjects. (I obtained 88% in math and 85% in science in my X grade public exam). I chose science group for my high schoo

l education & scored an overall aggregate of 85% standing within top 10% of my school. With these high grades I was able to choose the Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering for my under graduate course in Velammal Engineering college, affiliated to the prestigious Anna University.

Today, having completed my under-graduation in Electronics and Instrumentation engineering with bio-medical as my elective, I find its unique mix of Engineering, Medicine and Life Sciences very exciting. There is a tremendous potential for research and an increasing number of applications in today's world of medicine and technology. Therefore, I aspire to get into the bio-medical field and contribute my mite in applications that can directly influence people's quality of life.

my graduate studies in a reputed university at USA. I am particularly interested in bioinstrumentation and medical imaging. My research interest lie primarily in the areas of detectors and smart biosensors. My parallel areas of interest are Biomedical computing and biomedical signal processing and the applications of Biomedical Instrumentation for diagnostic imaging. This would help me gain command over the subject and also effectively attain my goal of becoming a research scholar in the bio-medical field

During my ug studies, I have gained knowledge about biomedical engineering as much as I can. I enrolled myself in the Instrumentation Society & Automation (ISA) & studying their monthly journal INTECH has helped me a lot in knowing the latest trends in biomedical engineering. During my free time, I went for an inplant training in colour doppler ultrasound at Wipro Ge medical systems, I also used to go the my grandpa’s hospital and look at the people in the lab working on the lab equipments and x-ray machines.

For our final year project and thesis, I along with my three like-minded classmates managed to design and implement The Automation and remote monitoring of a water distribution plant over GSM network. The main focus of this project was the automation of the already existing manually operated plant and also the wireless monitoring of the plant from a central control room. The constructive encouragement of our Project Guide and Evaluators helped us in producing a physical working model of our project. I especially enjoyed working on the project and the implementation of the communication system using the GSM network for it remote monitoring.

This communication system that we have used in our project

can also be used in telemedicine and teleradiolgy for the remote diagnosis of the patients and for the delivery of clinical care. I had also given a seminar on how we could use this communication system as a transmission medium in telemedicine and teleradiology My family members encouraged me during my school days to take part in extra and co - curricular activities which resulted in me being an enthusiastic and participative kid (I proudly add that I was the health minister in school when I was in the 10th standard! and the habit stuck on to me and will remain so too!

During my college days I was the academic coordinator and I also grabbed opportunities, which came, by my way to enhance my knowledge, for eg; I went for colour doppler ultrasound training at wipro Ge medical systems. Eventually I presented several papers and my paper on Temperature Monitoring system for Hyperthermia treatment of Cancer is one of my best favourites. From this paper presentation I had gained knowledge about the level of sophistication required in the filed of biomedical nstrumentation.

This further enhanced my interest in this particular field. Moreover my oratorical skills helped me to stand out in the crowd. Apart from my academics, I’m interested in reading novels & listening to music. I have been brought up in English medium, hence I have good proficiency in English which has encouraged me to participate in JAM contests & debates which has further strengthened my communication skills & I also express myself confidently using English language.

I had been the academic co-coordinator of my department association & have arranged department symposiums & events, which has

inculcated leadership qualities in me. I can also work in groups as I have participated in skits & group song events. My hobbies include playing table tennis & snooker. I also volunteer for the various free health camps organised in my grandpa’s hospital. As of now three major technologies have met and overlapped in the biomedical engineering field: electronics, biotechnology and computing.

I had an opportunity to undergo a training for four months with Infosys Technologies Ltd, one of the top IT companies in the world which gave me a first hand research and industrial exposure to computing. This program is certified equal to a ‘BS in Computer Science’. I scored a full 5/5 at the end of it. The knowledge gained will definitely be helpful in the areas of computing and information storage with respect to Bio Nanotechnology. The challenges that I faced also helped to develop inter personal skills while working towards a common goal as a team.

As indicated earlier my research interest lies in bioinstrumentation and medical imaging. I find the graduate program at XXX an apt fit to my research interests because, the facilities and the curriculum are excellent. Also the collaboration with the various institutions is also excellent. I aim to effectively use the knowledge gained through the MS program as a stepping stone towards further specific research and make significant contributions in this exciting new field. The potential of this field is indeed of large humanitarian value.

I am confident my MS program at XXX would help me in achieving this goal. My graduate study at your university, I hope, will help me grow my professional skills at the same time

I hope to gain expertise & maturity so that I qualify for a challenging career in India. I do hope I may be offered space in your graduate school so that I could take my second step in realizing my dream. With my dedication, perseverance & thirst to acquire knowledge, I’m confident that I would be capable enough to cope with the pressures of research work & would make you proud.
