The LeRoy Butler Story, written by J. Keller in 2003, is an extraordinary nonfiction book that chronicles the life of LeRoy from his birth to his time with the Green Bay Packers. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, LeRoy grew up alongside his mother, brother, and sister. Unfortunately, he was born with severely bad clubfeet which affected his ability to walk. At just eight months old, he underwent surgery and had to wear a full body cast from his chest downwards.
After the body cast was removed, LeRoy had to use leg braces to straighten and separate his feet. Getting dressed each morning required assistance from his siblings. Despite their mother's disapproval, LeRoy always attempted to climb the stairs on his own. On one occasion when his sister was getting ready for prom upstairs, he allowed her date into the house and informed
...him of her whereabouts. However, in her hurry to come downstairs she accidentally knocked over LeRoy and broke one of his braces. Filled with anger, he immediately stood up shouting while stomping his feet.
LeRoy's sister looked at him with tears streaming down her face; although initially thinking that she was crying because he yelled at her, it turned out that she was actually crying because he wasn't wearing any braces. LeRoy resided in Jacksonville's projects on Jefferson Street which unfortunately had more indicators of deceased bodies than hopscotch lines.
Shootings, stabbings, and drug use were frequent on Jefferson Street. Before Robert E. Lee High School, LeRoy attended Fort Caroline for Junior High School. He learned manners from his mother and taught his high school peers about respect and etiquette. After graduating, LeRoy receive
a college scholarship that brought happiness to his mother and siblings. Even in college, he couldn't stop thinking about a girl who had captured his heart despite the chaos around him. Eventually, LeRoy was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and always managed to uplift his teammates' spirits no matter what was happening. By chance, he unintentionally created the famous Lambeau Leap move which is now widely known across the United States. Overall, this book is incredibly inspiring and definitely worth reading as it would be enjoyed by many people. LeRoy serves as an exceptional inspiration for young children and students because of his unwavering respect towards everyone regardless of their actions or identities.
